IAN HART: Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good social media spat

$
0
0

Those time-honoured human traits, only reading what we want to read and hearing what we want to hear.

Last week’s column was on the theme of certain sections of our society blaming Theresa May for absolutely everything currently going wrong in the UK, and how that could almost be classed as tantamount to bullying.

On the Herald’s social media platforms it certainly prompted a response, both positive and negative, but before my detractors hold a torchlight procession to chez Hart or tar and feather me in the middle of Broadwater Green some clarity is required.

To reiterate Theresa May, like the rest of us humans, is flawed.

Her arrogance, or perhaps ignorance, in calling a needless General Election has caused no end of ongoing problems for the country. If anyone thought a year ago in the wake of the Brexit result that this country might be in some ways divided, then 12 months later it’s crystal clear that’s now very much the case.

Mrs May, among others including Messrs Johnson, Gove, Corbyn and McDonnell, is a principal architect of this

Her latest faux pas this week of the £1billion ‘sweetener’ to the DUP to prop her minority government is yet another ‘what the heck?’ moment which history may later view as an abject failure – unless that is she makes the greatest political comeback in history, which at best seems unlikely.

But as I stated last week, however hapless she is or is not as a Prime Minister, it’s not right she blamed for incidents and decisions that are clearly that are out of her control.

A much-loved trait of my late, and much-missed Mum, was that she strived to find the good in everybody, however difficult it was.

Despite coming under fire from apparently all directions, Mrs May still found the time on Sunday to spend time with retired servicemen, on the occasion of Armed Forces Weekend.

At the same time at Glastonbury, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell was not only getting down with kids but also describing, and ultimately politicising, the Grenfell Tower tragedy as an act of murder.

Even my most vociferous internet critics would find it difficult not to find some good in Mrs May on the back of her appearance last weekend – could they say the same for Mr McDonnell?

Pupils from across the area joined forces to learn about the environment and sustainability in a series of themed workshops.

Davison High School for Girls, in Selborne Road, Worthing hosted 24 other schools which joined the E.Y.E (Eco, Young & Engaged) project’s tenth Worthing & Adur Eco Summit last week.

Clare Sutton, project officer of the project, said: “It was great to see so many enthusiastic young people learning about different ways we can all help the environment and interacting so positively.”

Pupils shared their eco projects and activities in an assembly attended by Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, and councillor Alex Harman, the mayor of Worthing.

Mr Loughton, as founder of the project, said: “I am really grateful to the organising committee and teachers who have worked so hard and showed such enthusiasm which has clearly proved infectious with the pupils.”

A range of businesses and organisations such as Southern Water, STEM Sussex, The Southern Co-Operative and Eco Schools each set up workshop stands for children to visit. In one workshop organised by Davison staff, children made accessories like mobile phone covers using up-cycled materials such as old hi-vis clothing.

They ground flour to make dough for bread in a workshop by Plumpton College and Farming and Countryside Education, and watched professional Kite Surfer Lewis Crathern show the power of wind energy.

Among the schools attending were Georgian Gardens Community Primary, Rustington; Seaside Primary, Lancing; Holmbush Primary Academy, Shoreham; and Broadwater CE Primary.

Chichester Festival of Flowers 2018 launched

Chichester Cathedral Festival of Flowers 2018 has been launched today with three important announcements.

Preparations began with a celebratory Champagne afternoon tea attended by flower arrangers and VIPs from across the county.

There, they discovered the theme of next year’s festival, the celebrity festival patron and the festival flower for the first time.

Festival eesigner Jose Morum-Pound, revealed the theme will be This Earthly Paradise, exploring plant hunting, botany, horticulture and gardening. It will celebrate the plants which gave the continents their unique identity and fed the imagination which continues to inspire today’s gardeners and explorers.

Jose’s passion for plants is undeniable - a keen gardener and floral arranger, her appreciation of the beauty of flowers and her knowledge of their history and use were evident in the design as it was unveiled.

More than 240 flower arrangers across Sussex had been anticipating the announcement, which will inspire more than 80 floral arrangements as the arrangers interpret the theme to sensational effect. ‘

Emma Bridgewater, a British designer and businesswoman whose distinctive ceramics have a worldwide following, was announced as the patron of the 2018 Festival of Flowers.

Emma said: “The natural world produces a spiritual and emotional effect on me. I am really delighted to be involved with the festival.

“I feel a keen sense of anticipation already for that moment when you step into Chichester Cathedral to find it mystically transformed with flowers.”

Chichester Cathedral’s Festival of Flowers is renowned for innovation, with new varieties of plants and flowers developed to celebrate each festival.

Jonathan and Elizabeth Sawday from Apuldram Roses attended the launch and revealed the 2018 Festival Flower Nostalgia, a highly-perfumed tea rose with creamy blooms that are uniquely edged with cherry red.

Gardener’s World viewers voted the rose as the plant which had made the biggest impact on gardens over the past 50 years, making Nostalgia the perfect choice for the festival. In the past, there have been new varieties of roses, irises, pinks and sweet peas associated with Chichester Cathedral’s Festival of Flowers.

The festival is a biennial event organised by Chichester Cathedral Restoration and Development Trust. It is one of the most successful events in the trust’s portfolio, raising vital funds for the restoration of Chichester’s 900-year-old cathedral.

The festival attracts 15,000 visitors and has raised approximately £1million towards the cost of restoration work over the past 20 years.

Festival of Flowers 2018 will be a threeday spectacular during which visitors will experience the beauty of Chichester Cathedral adorned with flowers and trees, a programme of live music, a festival fair, plant fair and Café des Fleurs. It will take place from May 31 to June 2, 2018, with a Champagne preview on May 30. Tickets will go on sale this autumn.

Is change coming to Lancing’s high street?

$

Change is in the air in Lancing’s high street with the approval of a new Costa Coffee franchise, which could be followed by a pottery painting shop.

Applicants got the go ahead to convert the former LLoyd’s Bank building at 24 North Road into a coffee shop, run as a Costa Coffee franchise, in May.

The applicants said cafe would ‘sustain and enhance’ the ‘vitality and viability’ of Lancing town centre, which has a number of vacant units.

But not all residents were in favour of the plans.

During the consulation, Stevie Cornwell of Grafton Gardens objected to the proposal and said of the coffee shop: “It doesn’t meet the Lancing culture of supporting smaller local businesses that give back and work alongside the community.”

Sarah Sameja of South Street agreed and said: “The opening of a large chain coffee shop may be detrimental to other smaller run shops, which rely on their business to support their family.”

However, others were convinced it was just what the town centre needed.

Kathryn Banks of Orchard Avenue said a Costa Coffee would do more for Lancing than ‘the current empty unit’ and said: “The high street in Lancing needs more big names such as Costa to bring in footfall which will in turn help the independent shops.”

Further down the road, permission is being sought to convert a shop, which was formerly the watch, clock and jewellery store Facets gift emporium, into Amy’s Pottery Painting Studio.

The front of the shop would see a pottery painting room, where the public would be taught, alongside a small cafe areas selling drinks and snacks.

The appearance of the building would not be drastically altered, according to the applicant.

No comments to support or object to the plans have yet been registered online.

A decision is expected by Thursday, July 6, according to the planning website.

A further application would see a shop and offices at 12 North Road converted into a shop and three flats.

A decision is due on Thursday, July 15.

FoS: Motoring hosts are fans of ‘quintessentially English’ event

$

Two TV presenters have praised the Festival of Speed before filming part of their new show at the event.

Former racing driver Tiff Needell, and his co-host Jonny Smith, were at Goodwood to produce the first part of Forbidden Drives, their upcoming series, for MotorTrend On Demand.

Tiff said: “Where better to come to on a sunny day at the Goodwood Festival? It’s just a magnificent place.”

Jonny elborated, adding: “I think it’s also, for American viewers, quintessentially English isn’t it? I mean luckily it’s not raining but it doesn’t get more British for the majority of American viewers and people from outside of Britain who haven’t been to it, and it’s held in very high regard in Britain as well. In one place and one British stately home, you’ve got more expensive metal, race cars and road cars than anywhere in the world really apart from Pebble Beach and those sorts of places.”

The pair presented together on Fifth Gear, Channel 5’s hit motoring television, and are reunited for Forbidden Drives.

When asked to described the show, Jonny said: “The show, Forbidden Drives, is essentially... because Motor Trend is an American brand, although it’s globally accessible, this is all about the cars that we can get in Britain - past and present - that you could never get in America.

“So they could be complete new different cars or they could be a derivative of a model that you can’t get in America and really it’s like to say to Americans ‘it’s such a shame that you couldn’t get this because it’s great’.”

“To give you an example like Renault; you can’t buy a Renault in America so you can’t buy any of the sporty Clios, Meganes, any of those cool things and the previous generation Ford Focus RS, Americans couldn’t get and there was a bit of an uproar about that because you could get all of the Focuses apart from the hot one.”

Tiff, who also presented Top Gear in its first series, said: “We’re actually just delving in to this now, this is new to us as well. This is all happened about the last month.

“It’s entertaining us you know? Just beginning to think. It could be an off-roader, it could be a small sports car, it could be a hot hatch, it could be a big saloon car...

“We don’t actually know yet what you can’t get in America so until we’ve actually looked more at what you can’t get in America we’ll be able to find things out.”

The Festival of Speed is the perfect place for the duo to explore the scores of vehicles on display and for an ex-pro like Tiff it’s a chance to relive his youth with the cars that drew him in to the sport.

“The paddock up that hill just has all the dream cars that I watched as a kid. Goodwood was the first track I came to - I was about a three-year-old - and this is where my love of motorsport began. I’m a huge race fan. I used to watch Jim Clark, Stirling Moss race around Goodwood and now I can get to the paddock and see all the very cars that I watched 40 years ago.”

:: Forbidden Drives will be available for streaming in September on MotorTrend On Demand

Traffic is building as Goodwood’s Festival of Speed continues today, Saturday, July 1.

The A27 around Chichester is already heavily congested, particularly coming from the west to the Fishbourne Roundabout and east along Arundel Road where motorists are queueing for the turnoff to the festival.

There are currently no reports of accidents and through the city of Chichester, traffic appears to be moving freely.

Elsewhere there are no signs of any major accidents or road closures affecting motorists (as of 9am).

On the trains, a ban on overtime work for drivers continues to disrupt some services, and there are a number of engineering works taking place over the weekend, including between Redhill and Horley, and Brighton and Lewes on Sunday morning.

Police ‘will deal with cannabis users’ at Brighton’s Green Pride today

Police are warning anyone attending today’s Green Pride in Brighton that the supply and use of cannabis is illegal and officers will ‘deal with’ offenders ‘appropriately and proportionally’.

Police will have a noticeable presence at the festival, which takes place at Preston Park on Saturday, July 1.

The event is ‘a day to celebrate cannabis, pride and unity in one of Brighton’s prestigious parks’, organisers say on the Green Pride Facebook page, and police are anticipating increased numbers taking part this year.

Police in high visibility clothing and protest liaison officers will be at the site to facilitate any lawful protest, enforce the law and safeguard the wider public, the force said.

Chief Inspector Katy Woolford, of the Brighton Neighbourhood Response Team, said: “We are aware this event is growing in size and popularity, and we will police it accordingly.

“We will actively engage with those in attendance, and the relevant legislation will be used in the event of anyone found to be using illegal drugs.

“We will facilitate any lawful protest, but open drug use or supply will not be tolerated.

“We will deal appropriately and proportionately with any offences of drug use or supply that we come across.

“This could include warnings and fixed penalty notices being issued, substances being confiscated and arrests being made.”

CI Woolford added: “It’s also important to note that the park is used by a lot of local residents and visitors to the city – including families – and we would urge everyone to be mindful of others during the event.

“We are here to make sure everyone stays safe and to enforce the law.”

Anyone with any concerns in relation to drug use should report it online, police said.

The Met Police have arrested a man in East Sussex and two others in Essex on suspicion of terror offences, the force said.

Detectives from the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command, assisted by officers from Sussex Police, arrested two men in Essex and a third in East Sussex on Friday, June 30, on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, the Met said in a statement this morning, Saturday, July 1.

According to police the men, aged 28, 31 and 28, were arrested at approximately 6pm and are being held in custody under the Terrorism Act in a south London police station.

Detectives have also executed search warrants at one address in East Sussex, and three addresses in east London, the Met said, adding that enquiries are ongoing.

Jeremy Corbyn addresses St Leonards crowd

Jeremy Corbyn visited St Leonards today and told the crowd his Labour party are a ‘government in waiting’.

On his first day of national campaigning since the general election result, the Labour leader chose Hastings, one of the most marginal constituencies in the country where Conservative Home Secretary Amber Rudd only clung on to her seat.

The spoke to a large gathering crowd at Warrior Square Gardens shortly after 11am, Saturday, July 1.

Jeremy Corbyn said: “I am proud to be here today in Hastings where you came within a whisker - 346 votes - of painting the town red and electing Peter Chowney as a Labour MP.

“Labour gained seats across the country at the last general election, in every region and nation of Britain.

“Labour is no longer just the official opposition, we are a government in waiting.

“It is not good enough for politicians – including your MP the Home Secretary – to praise the police, firefighters and NHS staff when they respond to horrific incidents like the recent terrorist attacks or the Grenfell Tower fire, and then vote to make them worse off again year after year.

“This is what happened in parliament this week.

“Nurses in our hospitals have had a real terms pay cut of 14 percent under this government and some are even having to use food banks.

“Yet the government refused to back our calls to lift the public sector pay cap and recruit more police and firefighters.

“You can’t keep our communities safe on the cheap. When you cut over 20,000 police officers, over 11,000 firefighters, and leave our hospitals in record deficit having to cut back on services.

“We have to change our economic system so that it works for the many, not just a few.”

The Labour Party’s shadow cabinet members were out in force in other areas of the counrty today promoting the party’s national campaign claiming the Tory government under Theresa May ‘has #NoMandate’.

Recruitment day at Guild Care

$
0
0

When a loved one is diagnosed with dementia, it can be a frightening time for that person and their family.

At some point, they might not be able to live independently and finding the right care home is a very important decision to take.

Two years ago, Guild Care opened Haviland House, which is a care home in Worthing that is entirely devoted to supporting people living with dementia. It has recently adopted the ‘butterfly approach’ which has been developed by Dementia Care Matters.

Chris Walton-Turner, manager of Haviland House, said: “We all live in the moment – moments matter. For everyone with or without a dementia all we have is now.

“We cannot yet fix dementia as a condition but we can fix our approach. Showing people living with a dementia that we know their feelings matter most can transform lives.

“Dementia Care Matters has developed an approach using the metaphor of a butterfly. Staff who ‘get it’, know in their heart that quality of life matters. They learn how to look, sound and feel like butterflies at work.

“Being natural in dementia care involves flitting between people, being still, connecting, creating colour and changing moments.”

Haviland House comprises five ‘households’ for up to 12 people. Each supports a different stage of dementia. Staff do not wear uniforms and the living environment has been made to look less sterile and much more like a home.

Chris added: “So while Haviland House is a home for life, someone coming to live here may move from one household to another depending on the progression of their dementia.

“We are all on this journey together and we want to ensure that Haviland House provides a friendly and homely environment that makes more sense to the people who live here.

“The butterfly approach is a different way of supporting people living with dementia which puts the person at the centre and which we believe makes a real difference to their well-being.”

Gary Potter, a butterfly homemaker at Haviland House, spent 20 years in IT management before moving into the healthcare sector.

He said working in a care home like Haviland House is all about connecting with people.

“The ability to connect in a meaningful way with people is very important. You also need to be enthusiastic and have lots of energy both physical and mental.

“Working in this environment means you need to be able to be open-minded to change as every day can be different.

“The best thing about working here is the job satisfaction – just getting a smile from one of our family members really makes my day. Knowing that you’ve made people happy and made a positive difference to their day is really rewarding.”

If you would like to find out more about working with people living with dementia, are flexible in your approach and demonstrate an awareness of what matters in life, then you could be one of Guild Care’s butterflies.

The charity is currently looking for butterfly care and support workers and is holding a Recruitment Open Day at Haviland House, Robin Road, Worthing, on Tuesday, July 4, from 11am to 3pm. Contact the team by email to recruitment@guildcare.org or call 01903 863154 for an informal chat.

Guild Care also provides services to people with dementia and their carers who are still living in the community.

The Bradbury Wellbeing Centre offers a range of specialist services which include day respite at The Butterfly Club.

Time Out for Carers offers relatives the chance to have time to themselves, in the safe knowledge that their loved one is being looked after.

Time Out Together is a social evening where people with dementia and their families can come together and enjoy live entertainment.
